Kathmandu Valley has taken on a deserted appearance as thousands of people leave the capital to celebrate Dashain with their families in their hometowns. The festive exodus has significantly reduced traffic on the valley’s usually busy roads, while many shops and businesses have temporarily closed. Streets that normally remain crowded with vehicles and pedestrians throughout the day are now noticeably quieter.
